The 2001 World Slalom Skateboarding Championships will be held May 20th in the picturesque, seaside town of Morro Bay, California.

As you are aware the continuing growth of longboard skating has re-kindled interest in the lost art/sport of slalom skateboarding. All ages of riders are discovering the fun and challenge of blasting through gates.

In fact the Nationals will feature a diverse group of competitors ranging in age from late -teens to early 50's...from college student to corporate professional.

Some of skateboarding's early slalom legends including Henry Hester and Bob Skoldberg are scheduled to attend. Top racers from the 1980's and 1990's such as Paul Dunn and John Gilmour will also be competing. Chris Chaput, a world-class skateboard freestyler in the 1970's and one of modern day's top ranked luge and stand-up downhillers has commited to the race.

At the present time over 30 racers from 10 different states will be traveling to Morro Bay to compete for the title of National Champion.

Michael Brooke, publisher of International Longboarder Magazine has committed to a two-page feature article on the National Championships. 

ESPN, Fox Sports and Bluetorch have all expressed interest in covering this unique event.

The race will also be shot on video by Creative License; a Los Angeles based company headed up by Glen Darcy. A four-camera shoot is planned.

On the weekend of March 3rd & 4th more than 25.000 people attended the  "Red Bull DHX" Cape Town/ South Africa. Although we do not expect anywhere near that large of turnout it does illustrate the fact that people do enjoy watching skateboard racing. We are estimating that the 2001 National Slalom Championships could attract 1,500 to 2,000 spectators.

We plan on offering first place prize money of at least $1,000 and paying to 8th place. An entry fee of $50.00 will be paid by each competitor; all entry fee money will be donated to the City of Morro Bay skatepark fund.

The race will be held on Main Street in the very heart of downtown Morro Bay. An interesting side note is that skateboarding is actually against the law in this part of town. The ban has been lifted for the 2001 National Championships.
